Apple Crisp

Apple crisp is a sweet crispy dessert widely eaten in the United States and parts of Europe mainly in Ireland, Scotland and France. In Europe, however, apple crisp is locally referred to as apple crumble. But both the recipes are identically similar. For an apple crisp, the most vital part of the dish lies in the crispy topping, without which the dessert doesn't hold any significance. This apple crisp recipe is a fresh variation from regular apple cobbler, apple pies and other apple dessert recipes. This delicious dessert can be easily baked and is mostly prepared in the home oven.

Ingredients

The best time for making the flavorful apple crisp is during the harvest season, as fresh apples are preferred more than the store purchased ones. Mixing two types of apples can further give this apple crisp an extra edge in terms of its flavor and taste. The primary ingredients for the crispy topping are flour, butter, brown sugar, cinnamon or other spices, nuts (walnuts or almonds), old-fashioned oats; ingredients for the filling are fresh chopped apples, cranberries, blackberries, raspberries etc. Also, apples can be easily substituted with other fresh fruits for making the crisp recipe. Chefs do prefer only apple filling for the recipe, but at times mixing the diced apples with berries can give a colorful variant to this dessert.

Method

The topping ingredients for the apple crisp are blended in a food processor till they are crumbly in texture. The chopped apples or other fresh fruits are then laid over the baking pan, followed by the placing of the toppings. The apples are baked till the topping turns brown in color and gives a crispy finish to the dessert. The proportion of the fruit filling and the crispy topping should be equal, as the inappropriate quantity can make the apple crisp worse.

Serving

Earlier, apple crisp used to go along with whipped cream, but in the present day cooking some vanilla ice cream is preferred more. Apple crisp recipe can be prepared during holidays, small gatherings, parties for kids or for picnic.
