Betty's Husband Rick Makes New York Street Hot Dogs -- 4th of July

In this video Betty's husband, Rick, demonstrates how to make a classic New York hot dog as sold from carts throughout the city. It has a great taste and is easy and inexpensive to make to feed a crowd.


For onion sauce
Olive oil 3 Tablespoon (any frying oil, 2
Onion 1 Medium , sliced about 1/4 inch thick
Garlic cloves 2 , minced
Ground cinnamon 1/4 Teaspoon
Ketchup 2 Tablespoon
Water 1/2 Cup (8 tbs)
Coarse salt 1/2 Teaspoon
Hot sauce 1 Teaspoon (or to taste)
Ground black pepper To Taste
Brown sugar 1 Teaspoon (Optional)
Dijon mustard 1 Teaspoon
For hot dog
Hot dog 4
Hot dog buns 4
Horseradish mustard 4 Teaspoon (as needed)
Sauerkraut 1/4 Cup (4 tbs) (as needed)



For Onion Sauce:

1. In a pan, pour oil and saute the onions over medium heat until they begin to soften.

2. Add the garlic and cook until completely soft.

3. Stir in and cinnamon, sea salt, ketchup, water, hot sauce, brown sugar, ground black pepper, and Dijon mustard. Stir and simmer for about 10 minutes or until the sauce is thickened to desired consistency.

4. Remove from heat and set aside.

For Hot Dog:

5. In a large pot, add sufficient water to cover the dogs (but do not add them yet). Bring water just to a boil.

6. Reduce to a simmer and add the dogs. Heat for about 10 minutes.

7. Steam the buns for 2 minutes or until warm and soft.


8. Place dogs on buns and top them with horseradish mustard, onion sauce, and sauerkraut.


9. Serve and enjoy!
