Classic Scalloped Potatoes Recipe: thin sliced potatoes cooked in a rich cream sauce, topped with crunchy crumbs. AKA potatoes au gratin or potato gratin.

Minced onion | 1/4 Cup (4 tbs) | |
Garlic | 1 Clove (5 gm) , minced | |
Bay leaf | 1 | |
Salt | 1/2 Teaspoon | |
Pepper | 1/2 Teaspoon | |
Thyme | 1/4 Teaspoon | |
Whole milk | 1 1/2 Cup (24 tbs) , warmed | |
Russet potatoes | 3/4 Pound | |
Red potatoes | 3/4 Pound | |
Heavy cream | 1/2 Cup (8 tbs) | |
Grated cheese | 1/2 Cup (8 tbs) ((Gouda, Swiss, Cheddar or Gruyere)) | |
Coarse breadcrumbs | 1/2 Cup (8 tbs) |
GETTING READY:
1.Preheat oven to 350F.
2.Grease a casserole with butter.
MAKING:
3.Sprinkle breadcrumbs in the bottom of greased pan.
4.Heat a skillet and melt butter in it. Saute garlic and onion for about 10 minutes.
5.Add bay leaves, salt, pepper, milk, potatoes and simmer for 7 minutes (uncovered).
6.Lift out potatoes and arrange in the dish.
7.Pour liquid and cream over top and sprinkle cheese and breadcrumbs over it.
8.Pop into oven and bake for 40 minutes. Allow to cool for 10-15 minutes.
