Frozen puff pastry | 500 Gram (1 Pkg (2 sheets )) | |
Egg | 1 , beaten with 2 tablespoons water | |
Canned pie cherries | 796 Milliliter , drained (2 cans (398 mL)) | |
Bread crumbs | 1/2 Cup (8 tbs) (125 mL) | |
For sprinkling | ||
Sugar | 1/4 Cup (4 tbs) (50 mL) |
GETTING READY
1. Preheat oven to 400 degree F or 200 degree C.
2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
3. Into a bowl, place drained pie cherries, sprinkle bread crumbs over top, mix to coat well and set aside.
For Egg Wash:
4. In a bowl, beat egg and water and set aside.
MAKING
5. On lightly floured surface roll the sheets into 10x10-inch squares.
6. Cut a 1-inch wide strip from each side of the first puff pastry sheets.
7. Place the centre square on the prepared baking sheet, apply the egg wash around the edges and place the 1-inch strips on top of the egg washed edge of the base.
8. Apply egg wash the first layer strips and place the strips from the second sheets on top.
9. Fold the remaining square in half and cut vents for steam along the fold.
10. Spoon cherry mixture onto pastry base inside the wall made by the strips. Mound it carefully and use all of the cherry - the pastry will puff up.
11. Apply egg wash on walls and place vented top piece on top. Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with sugar.
12. Pop in oven and bake for 30 minutes. Reduce the temperature to 350 degree F and bake another 30 minutes.
