South Africa is facing a potato shortage so prices are rising, Potatoes South Africa said on Tuesday. Potatoes South Africa's manager for industry information Pieter van Zyl said the shortage was a result of droughts in the eastern and western Free State. "Between March and April we saw about 10 to 12 percent less potatoes in the market. In May and June we are likely to see 20 percent less than in March," said Van Zyl. He said the drought had influenced production and there were already less potatoes coming in to the fresh produce market. He said the knock-on effect was that prices have increased, with the cost of a 10kg bag rising by about R7 since March. The cost was likely to increase further in May and June. - SapaSource: http://www.iol.co.za
