Braised Flank Steak Braciola Stuffed with Basil and Mozzarella

Ingredients

Flank steak 1 Pound
Salt To Taste
Fresh ground black pepper To Taste
Grated mozzarella 150 Gram (6 ounce)
Grated parmesan 85 Gram , freshly grated (3 ounce)
Fine breadcrumbs 65 Gram (1/3 cup)
Basil leaves 15 Gram (12 large)
Olive oil 50 Milliliter , divided (1/4 cup)
Yellow onion 1 Large (or 2 small)
Red wine 1/2 Cup (8 tbs)
Whole tomatoes 28 Ounce (1 can whole tomatoes and their juices)
Crushed red pepper flakes 1/4 Teaspoon
Mushrom 225 Gram , quartered

Directions

GETTING READY

1. In food processor, place the breadcrumbs, basil, mozzarella, and Parmesan. Pulse to combine.

2. Butterfly the flank steak lengthwise and open it up like a book.

MAKING

3. Sprinkle cheese mixture evenly over the steak and pat it well. Roll it up as shown in the video and with butcher twine tie it in four or five places. Trim off the extra twine.

4. Place a Dutch oven over medium-high flame and heat half of the oil in it.

5. Add the rolled flank steak and brown until it releases from the pan. Turn and brown on all sides then transfer it to a plate.

6. Pour the remaining oil and add onion to it. Lower the heat to medium and season with salt. Stir and cook until the onion turns light brown.

7. Add the red wine, stir and scrape up the fond from the bottom of the Dutch oven.

8. Add tomatoes and red pepper flakes. Turn up the heat and bring to a boil.

9. Reduce the flame and place the meat back into the Dutch oven.

10. Throw mushrooms into the broth. Cover and cook for about 1½ hours, turning the meat occasionally.

SERVING

11. Slice and serve topped with the sauce and vegetables.
