Learn how to make Fried Green Tomatoes. But first we take a trip to Johnson's Backyard Garden to pick green tomatoes!
Green tomato | 1 Large | |
Celery salt/Garlic salt | To Taste (or onion salt / regular salt) | |
For dredging: | ||
Egg | 1 | |
Flour | 1/2 Cup (8 tbs) | |
Cornmeal | 1/2 Cup (8 tbs) | |
Salt | 1/2 Teaspoon | |
Pepper | 1/2 Teaspoon | |
Cayenne pepper | 1/4 Teaspoon (optional) | |
For frying: | ||
Vegetable oil | 2 Tablespoon | |
Bacon fat | 2 Tablespoon (or more vegetable oil) | |
Lemon wedges | 2 (for serving) | |
Ranch dressing | 2 Tablespoon (for serving) | |
Hot sauce | 2 Tablespoon (for serving) |
MAKING:
1.Sprinkle salt over sliced tomatoes.
2.In a bowl, beat egg and set aside.
3.In another bowl, combine flour, cornmeal, salt, pepper, cayenne pepper and mix well.
4.Dredge the tomato slices in egg, flour mixture, egg again and finally flour mixture.
5.Heat oil and bacon fat in a frying pan and fry tomato slices in it.
6.Cook for 6-8 minutes (3-4 minutes per side) until golden brown.
7.Drain excess oil using paper towels.
8.Sprinkle salt and serve hot.
SERVING:
9.Serve and enjoy!
NOTES:
The ingredient amounts given above for the dredging mixture should be enough to coat 8-10 slices of tomato (2 medium tomatoes).
