Potato and Green Peas Masala Bhaat by Tarla Dalal

Sometimes common ingredients produce more magical outcomes than exotic ones! Here is a simple example. Although it uses just a simple masala of coconut, chilies, ginger and garlic, the Potato and Green Peas Masala Bhaat appears like an elaborate preparation for a special occasion! On a busy day, you can serve it simply with a raita and you have a tasty meal ready.


Ghee 1 1/2 Tablespoon
Long grained rice 1 Cup (16 tbs) , soaked for 15 minutes and drained
Hot water 2 1/2 Cup (40 tbs)
Potato cubes 1/2 Cup (8 tbs)
Green peas 1/2 Cup (8 tbs)
Chili powder 1/2 Teaspoon
Coriander cumin powder 1 1/2 Teaspoon
Turmeric powder 1/4 Teaspoon
Salt To Taste
For paste
Grated coconut 2 Tablespoon
Chopped ginger 1 Teaspoon
Green chili 2 , roughly chopped
Garlic cloves 3
For garnish
Finely chopped coriander 1 Tablespoon



1. In mixer, grind coconut, ginger, chili, and garlic into smooth paste using little water and set aside.


2. In a deep non-stick skillet, heat ghee, add rice and sauté over medium flame for 2 minutes.

3. Pour hot water and add potato, green peas, chili powder, coriander-cumin powder, prepared paste, turmeric powder and salt. Mix well. Stir occasionally, cover and cook over medium flame for 12-15 minutes.


4. Serve hot garnished with coriander.
