Moong Dal Savoury by Tarla Dalal

This savoury is easy to make and great to serve for breakfast or even for parties.


For batter
Split yellow gram 3/4 Cup (12 tbs) (yellow moong dal)
Fresh yogurt 2 Tablespoon (dahi)
Green chilies 4 (roughly chopped)
Salt To Taste
Asafoetida 1 Pinch (hing)
Bengal gram flour 1 Tablespoon (besan)
Baking powder 1/2 Teaspoon
Water 1/4 Cup (4 tbs)
For topping
Boiled green peas 1 1/4 Cup (20 tbs) (mashed)
Oil 1 Tablespoon
Cumin seeds 1 Teaspoon
Finely chopped green chillies 2 Teaspoon
Dried mango powder 1 Teaspoon (amchur)
Finely chopped coriander leaves 2 Tablespoon
Other ingredients
Oil 3 Teaspoon (for cooking the savories)




1. Soak the moong dal for 2 - 3 hours and drain well.

2. In the mixer, combine together soaked dal, yogurt, green chilies and ¼ cup of water and blend to form a smooth paste.

3. Now add the remaining batter ingredients. mix gently, and keep aside.


4. In a non stick pan, add oil, and when hot add cumin seeds. As soon as the seeds start crackling, add green peas, salt and green chilies. Mix properly and cook for a minute or two, while stirring continuously.

5. Now add dried mango powder and coriander and cook for a minute or two, while stirring intermittently. Turn off heat and keep aside.


6. Take a greased non stick griddle, and when hot brush it lightly with oil. Pour a spoonful of batter on the griddle and spread in a circular motion to form a 3 inch diameter circle.

7. Spread little amount of stuffing on the mooing dal savoury and press it in a gentle way. Cook for a minute or so on low flame and flip over and cook for a couple of minutes.

8. Take it off from the griddle and repeat the same procedure with the remaining batter to make 11 more savouries.


9. Serve the savouries hot with green chutney.


Green peas stuffing can be prepared a day ahead.
