Khichdi-Bengali Style

Bengali-style khichdi is aromatic and also laden with veggies and dal. In short, it is a flavoursome and power-packed meal. The use of crushed spices instead of whole or powdered ones brings about a significant change in the recipe -- you will notice it when you prepare the khichdi. Serve hot.


Rice 1 Cup (16 tbs) , soaked and drained
Split red lentil 1/2 Cup (8 tbs)
Ghee 3 Tablespoon
Bay leaves 2
Onion 1/2 Cup (8 tbs) , finely chopped
Ginger garlic paste 2 Teaspoon
Turmeric powder 1/2 Teaspoon
Green peas 1/2 Cup (8 tbs)
French beans 1/2 Cup (8 tbs) , cut into 1 inch pieces
Onion 7 Small , peeled
Baby potatoes 5 Peeled
Green chili 2 1/2 Teaspoon , finely chopped
Hot water 3 1/2 Cup (56 tbs)
Salt To Taste
To be ground coarsely
Cloves 4
Cardamom 2
Cinammon sticks 2



1. Grind cloves, cardamon and cinnamon to a coarse powder.


2. In a non-stick handi,heat ghee, add in the bay leaves and the ground powder and sauté on a medium flame for a few seconds. Add the onions and cook over medium heat for another 2 minutes.

3. Add the ginger garlic paste, turmeric powder, rice and red lentil dal, mix and cook over a medium heat for about 2 minutes.

4. Pour in the hot water, add green peas, french beans, onions, potatoes, green chilies and salt, stir to mix, cover and cook over slow flame for at least 20 minutes.


5. Serve hot with buttermilk, salad, pickle and papad.
