Dal makhani, a flavorful robust lentil preparation, is a celebrated delicacy from punjab. Rajma and whole urad provide protein and calcium which are extremely important for maintenance of your body cells and healthy bones. Cooking the dal in tomato puree adds a little sharpness to this dish and also enriches it with folic acid and vitamin a. Try this dal with methi makai ki roti, to make a satisfying low fat meal.


Urad 1/2 Cup (8 tbs) (whole black lentil)
Rajma 1 Tablespoon (kidney beans)
Low fat milk 1/2 Cup (8 tbs)
Oil 1 Teaspoon
Cumin seeds 1/2 Teaspoon
Finely chopped onion 1/2 Cup (8 tbs)
Ginger garlic paste 1 Teaspoon
Chili powder 1 Teaspoon
Coriander powder 2 Teaspoon
Turmeric powder 1/4 Teaspoon
Tomato pulp 3/4 Cup (12 tbs) (fresh)
Salt To Taste
For garnish
Chopped coriander 2 Tablespoon



1. Clean, wash and soak the urad and rajma overnight. Drain well.


2. In a pressure cooker, place the soaked dal and rajma along with salt and 2 cups of water. Pressure cook for 6-7 whistles or till they are overcooked.

3. When the steam has escaped, open the lid and whisk well to almost mash the dal and rajma. Pour milk into the cooker, stir well and set aside.

4. In a deep skillet, heat oil, add cumin and allow it to splutter.

5. Add onion, ginger-garlic paste and cook over low flame for a few seconds.

6. Stir in chili powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder and 2 tablespoons of water. Stir constantly and cook for 1 minute.

7. Add another 2 tablespoons of water and tomato pulp. Stir occasionally and cook for 1 minute.

8. Add the prepared urad dal rajma mixture and season with salt. Stir occasionally and cook over low flame for 10 minutes.


9. Serve hot garnished with coriander.
