French Beans Foogath by Tarla Dalal

Variation of the famous South Indian ' Beans foogath', I've added chana dal to the dish which adds to its existing flavors.


Chopped french beans 2 Cup (32 tbs) , stringed and diagonally cut
Oil 1 1/2 Teaspoon
Mustard seeds 1/2 Teaspoon
Soaked urad dal 1 Teaspoon (split black lentils)
Soaked chana dal 2 Tablespoon (split Bengal gram)
Curry leaves 6 (4
Asafoetida 1/4 Teaspoon
Slit green chilies 2
Salt To Taste
Grated coconut 1/4 Cup (4 tbs)
Chopped coriander 2 Tablespoon



1. In a pan, heat oil, add mustard and allow it to splutter.

2. Add urad dal, chana dal , curry leaves, asafoetida and green chilies. Saute over medium flame for a few seconds

3. Add chopped French beans, season with salt and sprinkle 2 tablespoons of water. Stir occasionally, cover and cook on low flame for 10 minutes or until tender.

4. Stir in grated coconut and coriander. Cook for 2 minutes.


5. Serve hot and enjoy!
