Spicy Mixed Dal by Tarla Dalal

With five protein-rich dals, this spicy mixed dal version combines curds and traditional spices to give a tangy, spicy, delectable accompaniment for parathas and rotis. This dal can be prepared easily and quickly, but remember to soak them together for an hour to ensure uniform cooking.

Ingredients

Yellow moong dal 1 Tablespoon (split yellow gram)
Masoor dal 1 Tablespoon (split red lentil)
Urad dal 1 Tablespoon (split black lentils)
Chana dal 1 Tablespoon (split Bengal gram)
Toor dal 1 Tablespoon (arhar)
Salt To Taste
Turmeric powder 1/2 Teaspoon
For tempering
Ghee 2 Tablespoon
Cumin seeds 1 Teaspoon
Finely chopped onion 1/2 Cup (8 tbs)
Ginger garlic paste 2 Teaspoon
Finely chopped tomato 1/2 Cup (8 tbs)
Garam masala 1/2 Teaspoon
Chili powder 1 Teaspoon
Coriander cumin powder 2 Teaspoon
Fresh curd 1/2 Cup (8 tbs) , beaten
Finely chopped coriander 1 Tablespoon

Directions

GETTING READY

1. Wash moong, masoor, urad, chana, and toor dal. Soak for 1 hour and then drain.

MAKING

2. In pressure cooker, place the soaked dal along with 2 cups of water. Add salt and turmeric powder. Mix well and pressure cook for 3 whistles. Allow the steam to escape before opening the lid.

For Tempering:

3. In a non-stick pan, heat ghee and add the cumin seeds. Allow them to splutter.

4. Add the onions and ginger-garlic paste and saute on medium flame for 1 minute.

5. Add tomato, 2 tablespoons of water, mix well and cook for 2 minutes.

6. Stir in garam masala, chili powder and coriander-cumin powder. Mix well and cook for 2 more minutes.

7. Add curd and coriander. Stir constantly and cook for another 1-2 minutes.

8. Add cooked dal and cook on a low flame for another 2 minutes, stirring occasionally.

SERVING

9. Serve hot with rotis or parathas.
