Moong Dal Sheera by Tarla Dalal

This recipe is ambrosia for all sweet lovers, especially those fond of sheera. This recipe is divine. It is coarse and sweet. It generally takes a long time to cook, but this recipe is made in just 20 minutes.

Ingredients

Yellow moong dal 1/2 Cup (8 tbs)
Ghee 1/2 Cup (8 tbs)
Milk 1/2 Cup (8 tbs)
Sugar 1/2 Cup (8 tbs)
Water 1/2 Cup (8 tbs)
Saffron strands 1/4 Teaspoon , dissolved in 1 tbsp water
Cardamom powder 1/2 Teaspoon
Almond slivers 1 Tablespoon
For garnish

Directions

GETTING READY

1. Soak dal in enough warm water for 2-3 hours and drain well.

2. In mixer, blend soaked dal into a coarse paste without using any water.

3. Into a muslin cloth, place the moong dal paste and press to remove excess water.

4. Remove the moong dal pate from the muslin cloth into a plate and separate it using a spoon. Keep aside.

MAKING

5. In a broad non-stick pan, heat the ghee, add the moong dal paste. Cook over medium flame for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally.

6. Pour ½ cup of water and milk. Mix well, cover and cook over low flame for 1-2 minutes, stirring occasionally.

7. Add sugar and mix well and cover and cook on low flame for another 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally.

8. Stir in saffron-water mixture, cardamom powder and almond slivers.

SERVING

9. Serve hot garnished with almond slivers.

TIPS

You can add 3 tablespoons of khoya for richness but make sure to add more sugar.
