Tomato Chutney by Tarla Dalal

Like most South Indian recipes, this is a hot and spicy tomato and onion chutney.
Perk up your meal with this chutney. Purée this to make a smooth chutney and enjoy the contrasting flavours.

Ingredients

Oil 2 Teaspoon
Chana dal 1 Teaspoon (split Bengal gram)
Urad dal 1 Teaspoon (split black gram)
Curry leaves 8
Finely chopped green chili 2 Teaspoon
Finely chopped onion 1/4 Cup (4 tbs)
Finely chopped tomato 1 Cup (16 tbs)
Water 2 Tablespoon
Turmeric powder 1/8 Teaspoon
Salt To Taste
For tempering
Oil 1 Teaspoon
Mustard seeds 1/2 Teaspoon
Whole dry kashmiri red chilies 1 , broken into pieces

Directions

MAKING

1. In a non-stick pan, heat oil, add the chana dal, urad dal and curry leaves. Saute over medium flame for about 1 minute or until the dals turn light brown in color.

2. Add green chili, onion, saute for about 1 minute.

3. Stir in tomatoes, pour 2 tablespoon of water, mix well and cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally.

4. Add turmeric powder and salt. Mix well and cook for 1 minute, over medium flame.

5. Allow it to cool completely and blend in mixer till smooth. Keep aside.

For Tempering:

6. In a small pan, heat oil and add mustard seeds. Let them splutter.

7. Add the red chilies and saute for 30 seconds, over medium flame. Pour tempering on the chutney and mix well.

SERVING

8. Serve immediately with idli, dosa, or uttapam or store in an air-tight container in the refrigerator.
