Matar - Tamatar ki Sabzi (Green Peas and Tomato Curry)

Simple and spicy Indian style curry, made with peas and tomatoes. I served this with Aloo Kachodi, you can enjoy this with chapatti or poori.


Oil 2 Tablespoon
Cumin seeds 1 Teaspoon
Asfoetida 1 Dash
Onion paste 1/4 Cup (4 tbs)
Garlic paste 1 Teaspoon
Ginger paste 1 Teaspoon
Turmeric powder 1 Teaspoon
Red chili powder 1/2 Teaspoon
Coriander powder 2 Teaspoon
Garam masala 1 Teaspoon
Fresh tomato puree 1/2 Cup (8 tbs)
Green peas 1 Cup (16 tbs)
Salt To Taste
Coriander leaves 1/4 Cup (4 tbs) , finely chopped
Water 9 Tablespoon , divided (1/2 cup + 1 tbsp.)



1. In a small bowl, add in 1 tbsp. of water, turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, garam masala and salt. Mix well and set aside, this way your spices won’t burn.


2. In a skillet, heat oil, add in the cumin seeds and asfoetida, let it crackle. Add in onions and sauté for 3 minutes.

3. Add in the ginger and garlic paste and stir well, followed by spice paste and sauté well until the oil starts separating from the mixture.

4. Pour in the tomato puree and add the green peas. Cook until oil separates, while stirring continuously.

5. Pour in the water and bring to a boil. Cover the skillet with lid and simmer for 5 minutes on low heat.


6. Garnish the Matar Tamatar with coriander leaves and serve with chapatti.
