South Indian Breakfast - Green Peas and Tomato Upma

Upma is an easy South Indian breakfast recipe, which is good for your health. I served this with some tangy pickles you can choose sambhar or coconut chutney.


Semolina 1 Cup (16 tbs)
Oil 1 Tablespoon
Mustard seeds 1/2 Teaspoon
Cumin seeds 1/2 Teaspoon
Curry leaves 5
Green chilies 1 Teaspoon , finely chopped
Ginger 1 Teaspoon , finely chopped
Onions 1 Small , finely chopped
Tomatoes 1/4 Cup (4 tbs)
Green peas 1/4 Cup (4 tbs)
Salt To Taste
Boiled water 2 Cup (32 tbs)
Fresh lemon juice 1 Tablespoon



1. In a skillet, add the semolina and dry roast for 5 minutes while stirring continuously. Take out the semolina in a plate and set aside.

2. Into the same skillet, heat the oil and once the oil is hot add in the mustard seeds, cumin seeds, green chilies, ginger and curry leaves. Let it pop.

3. Add in the onion, let it sauté for a minute or two. Stir in the tomatoes and green peas and season with salt and sauté for a few minutes.

4. Pour in the boiled water, roasted semolina and lemon juice. Cook until the water is absorbed.


5. Serve the Peas and Tomato Upma with some pickles.
