Chayote Dal - Seema Vankaya Pappu

Simple dal cooked with Chayote (Seema Vankaya) and topped with flavorful tempering.


Toor dal 1/3 Cup (5.33 tbs)
Water 1 Cup (16 tbs)
Chayote 1/2 Cup (8 tbs) , chop
Onion 1/2 Cup (8 tbs) , chop
Tomato 1/2 Cup (8 tbs) , chop
Green chillies 2 Tablespoon , chop (or to taste)
For the seasoning
Oil 2 Teaspoon
Mustard seeds 1/2 Teaspoon
Cumin seeds 1/2 Teaspoon
Garlic 1 Clove (5 gm) , slice
Turmeric powder 1/2 Teaspoon
Curry leaves 4 Small
Asafoetida 1 Pinch
Cilantro 1 Tablespoon , chop
Salt To Taste



1. In the pressure cooker add the toor dal, water, chayote, onions, tomatoes and green chilies. Close the lid and cook until you hear 3 whistles.

2. Using a dal masher mash the dal and bring it to a boil.

3. In a pan pour oil and add mustard seeds allow it to crack, add cumin seeds, garlic, turmeric powder, curry leaves and asafetida.

4. Add the seasoning to the dal and add cilantro and salt, stir everything and turn off the heat.


5. Serve with rice or any Indian bread.


You can cook the dal until 7-8 whistles for smooth consistency.
