Chana Masala - Chickpeas Gravy Curry

This is a spicy, tasty, protein rich Punjabi dish which is very popular throughout the world now. Easy to make and can be had with any Indian bread.


Chickpeas 1/2 Cup (8 tbs) , soaked (and rinsed)
Oil 2 Teaspoon
Bay leaf 1 Medium
Cinnamon sticks 1 Large
Cumin seeds 1 Teaspoon
Cloves 2 Small
Finely chopped onion 1 Cup (16 tbs)
Ginger garlic paste 1 Tablespoon
Kashmiri red chilli powder 1 Teaspoon (to taste)
Chole masala 2 Teaspoon
Salt To Taste
Tomato 1 Large , chop
Water 1 Cup (16 tbs) (more if needed)
Cilantro 2 Tablespoon , finely chopped



1. Wash and soak the chickpea in water for 8 hours. You can soak it overnight as well.


2. In the pressure cooker pour oil and add bay leaf, cinnamon stick, cloves and cumin seeds. Allow it to sizzle and add the onion and cook the onions for 2-3 minutes or until soft, covered.

3. Add the ginger garlic paste, stir and cook for 30 seconds, add Kashmiri red chili powder, salt and chole masala. Stir everything.

4. Add tomatoes and cook covered for 3-4 minutes or until soft. Add chickpeas and stir.

5. Finally add water as desired, adjust the salt and spices at this point, cover the pressure cooker and cook until you hear 1 whistle.

6. After 1 whistle cook on low heat for ½ an hour. Turn off the heat and transfer in a serving bowl. Garnish with cilantro.


7. Serve with poori, bhatura or rice.


If you short on time the boil 2 cups of water and then place the washed chickpeas in an insulted container pour the boiling water. Cover and soak for 4 hours.


If you do not have chole masala then you can substitute it with 2 teaspoon of coriander powder and 1 teaspoon of cumin powder and ½ teaspoon of dry mango powder.

You can mash the chickpeas if you want.
