South Indian Breakfast - Medu Vada

Medu Vadas are a traditional breakfast of South Indians, but this has its own share of popularity among North Indians, here people can have these as breakfast, lunch or even as evening snacks. :P


Split black gram 1 Cup (16 tbs)
Green chilies 1
Peppercorns 4
Salt To Taste
Ginger 1 Teaspoon , chopped
Water 1/4 Cup (4 tbs)
Oil 1/2 Cup (8 tbs) (For deep frying)



1. In a large bowl, soak the split black gram in enough water for at least 2 hours.


2. Drain, add in the green chilies, pepper and ginger and blend in a blender to a smooth batter, adding water.

3. Add in the salt and mix well and divide the mixture into 10 equal portions. Set aside.

4. In a skillet, pour in the oil and heat on medium.

5. Wet your hands with water and take a portion of the mixture in your hand. Make a hole in the center with your thumb. Carefully drop the vada into the oil. Deep fry the vada till both sides turn golden brown in color. Repeat the process with the rest of the ingredients.


6. Serve Medu Vadas with Tomato - Onion Chutney and enjoy!
