Beans Thoran

'Thorans' are traditional preparations in Keralite cuisine. Every day there would be a different type of thoran in our homes and it has become a mandatory side dish! This beans thoran is an easy way to prepare delicious side dish perfect for daily cooking!


Beans 1 Cup (16 tbs) , chopped
Onion 1/2 Cup (8 tbs) , chopped
Water 1/2 Cup (8 tbs)
For grinding:
Shredded coconut 1/2 Cup (8 tbs)
Garlic 4 Clove (20 gm)
Cumin seeds 1/2 Tablespoon
Turmeric powder 1/4 Teaspoon
Chilli powder 1/2 Tablespoon
Salt To Taste
For seasoning:
Mustard seeds 1/4 Tablespoon
Curry leaves 1 Tablespoon



1. In a grinder add shredded coconut, garlic cloves, cumin seeds, salt, turmeric powder and chilli powder. Coarsely grind the ingredients.


2. Heat oil in a wide pan/skillet and crackle mustard seeds and curry leaves.

3. Add the chopped onion and beans; saute for 2 minutes. Close the lid, add water and cook on low heat until the vegetables are half cooked.

4. Add the coarse ground ingredients and stir-fry continuously until the contents are completely cooked and drained.


5. Serve this beans thoran with hot boiled/steamed rice and some curry.
