South-Indian fish preparations always possess an excellent flavour and exotic taste. This Nethili Maangai Aviyal(Anchovies with mango) is a popular preparation in Kerala cuisine as well as Nanjil style cooking - Nagercoil-Kanyakumari district, where I belong to.


Anchovies 1 Cup (16 tbs) , cleaned (boneless)
Raw mango 1/2 Cup (8 tbs) , sliced
Green chiles 3 Medium , slit lengthwise
Water 5 1/2 Cup (88 tbs)
For grinding:
Shredded coconut 1/2 Cup (8 tbs)
Small onion 4 Medium , peeled
Turmeric powder 1/2 Teaspoon
Chilli powder 3/4 Teaspoon
Salt To Taste
For garnishing:
Curry leaves 2 Medium



1. In a large bowl, add the cleaned fresh anchovies and sliced mangoes. Mix well and keep aside.

2. In a grinder, add shredded coconut, small onion, turmeric powder and chilli powder. Coarsely grind the ingredients.


3. In a wide pan, add the anchovy-mango mixture and the ground spices. Mix well. Add green chiles, salt and water to the mixture.

4. Place the pan on heat and allow it to simmer till the anchovies and mangoes get fine cooked. Do not stir the ingredients frequently.


5. Garnish with fresh curry leaves and serve with warm rice.
