Kerala - Style Coconut Chutney

This is a delicious South Indian spicy condiment very commonly made in Kerala. It is typically made with coconut mixed with other spices and served with Idli, Dosa and Vada.


Grated coconut 1/2 Cup (8 tbs)
Red onion 1/4 Small , chopped
Garlic cloves 2 Medium , chopped
Green chili 1 Small , chopped (Adjust as per taste)
Salt To Taste
Tamarind 1 Teaspoon
Chopped ginger 1 Pinch (Optional)
Water 2 Tablespoon (Use more or less depending on the desired consistency of the chutney)
Seasoning (optional)
Oil 2 Tablespoon
Mustard seeds 1/2 Teaspoon
Dry red chilies 2 Medium
Curry leaves 5 Medium



1. In a blender, put in all the ingredients and blend to get a coarse paste.

2. Add water slowly, as needed and blend again to make the consistency as desired.

3. Once done, transfer into a serving bowl.

4. If you prefer a seasoning over your chutney, heat a pan with oil. When hot enough, add mustard seeds, dry red chilies and curry leaves. Saute for about 30 seconds and pour this seasoning over the chutney.


5. Serve fresh with dosa, idli or vada.
