Meen Achar/ fish pickle is a very pricy dish on palette of Keralite non-vegetarian food lovers. Fishes such as seer fish, sardine, prawns, butter fish, pomphret, anchovies, are some of the popular kinds of fish used for making this pickle.

Sardine fish 1 Kilogram , cutting (For Marinating)
Chili powder 1 Teaspoon
Gingelly oil 1 Tablespoon
Turmeric powder 1 Teaspoon
Salt 1 Teaspoon
Pepper powder 1 Teaspoon
Cumin 1 Teaspoon (Spice Mix)
Fenugreek seeds 1 Teaspoon
Mustard seeds 1 Teaspoon
Gingelly oil 1/4 Cup (4 tbs) (For Gravy)
Kashmiri chili powder 4 Teaspoon
Curry leaves 2 Teaspoon
Garlic 2 Clove (10 gm)
Ginger 2 Teaspoon
Sugar 1 Teaspoon
Green chilies 2 Large , slitted
Turmeric powder 1/2 Teaspoon
Vinegar 1/4 Cup (4 tbs)

1. Take a vessel, and add the cubed fish pieces into it.

2. Add 1 tsp of chili powder, ¼ tsp turmeric powder, ½ tsp pepper powder and salt and allow the fish to marinate in this mixture for next 15-20 minutes.

3. Add gingelly oil to a thick bottomed pan and heat it.

4. Fry the marinated fish pieces in it, until they become crisp ( moisture is removed , and it increases shelf life of a fish)

5. Take another thick bottomed pan, and heat ¼ cup gingelly oil. Add fenugreek, mustard and allow it to splutter.

6. Add curry leaves, ginger and garlic, and fry them until the mixture browns. Cook on low heat during this frying period.

7. Add ½ tsp pepper powder, 4 tsp chili powder, salt and ¼ tsp turmeric powder and stir well. Fry the mixture until the spices lose their raw smell and start emanating an earthy aroma.

8. Add some salt and ¼ cup vinegar, and heat the mixture for few seconds. The sourness of the pickle gravy can be adjusted by boiling the vinegar mixture for few more minutes.

9. Add crispy fried fish into the vinegar mixture and mix well.

10. Heat a thick bottomed pan, and dry roast fenugreek seeds, cumin, mustard and salt.

11. Coarsely pound the roasted spices in mortar and pestle.

12. Add this spice mixture to the pickle and mix it well. This spice mix adds aroma and taste to your pickle.

13. Serve this fish pickle with rice and breads.
