Fugiyas are made by mixing flour, eggs and coconut milk together with yeast. Some recipes use regular milk but I prefer the rich taste of coconut milk in my Fugiyas. Once the dough rises, the dough is grabbed with one hand and released with the other hand that is wet and the ball of dough is just dropped into the oil when it puffs up. This is an East Indian tradition that you can make in your own home!
All purpose flour | 2 Cup (32 tbs) (unsifted) | |
Whole wheat flour | 1/2 Cup (8 tbs) (sifted) | |
Egg | 1 , beaten | |
Sugar | 7 1/2 Tablespoon (3 tbsps per cup) | |
Yeast | 1 1/2 Teaspoon | |
Warm water | 1 Cup (16 tbs) | |
Canned coconut milk | 200 Milliliter (plus extra Milk or Coconut Milk if required) | |
Salt | 1 Pinch | |
Oil | 2 Cup (32 tbs) (For deep frying) |
GETTING READY:
In a bowl, combine warm water, yeast, sugar and set aside for 15-30 minutes until it froths.
MAKING:
In a bowl, combine all purpose flour, wheat flour and mix well.
In another bowl, combine beaten egg, yeast mixture, coconut milk and mix well.
Add flour mixture and sugar mixture in batches. Add salt and mix well.
Set aside and allow to rise for 1 hour.
Make dough balls as shown in the videos and deep fry in oil.
Drain excess oil in paper towels.
