Bisi Bele Bhaat, a traditional spicy rice dish from Karnataka is quite addictive served piping hot topped with lots of ghee and accompanied by fried papads and a cool raita, it is almost impossible to say no to this One Dish Meal.

Ingredients

For the paste
Coconut oil 1 Tablespoon
Chana dal 1 Tablespoon ((split bengal gram))
Urad dal 1 Tablespoon ((split black lentils))
Grated coconut 1/4 Cup (4 tbs) ((kopra))
Dry kashmiri red chillies 5 ((broken into pieces))
Cinnamon stick 1 Small ((dalchini))
Coriander seeds 2 Tablespoon
Other ingredients
Coconut oil 2 Teaspoon
Curry leaves 7 ((kadi patta))
Chopped potatoes 1/2 Cup (8 tbs)
Chopped capsicum 1/2 Cup (8 tbs)
Chopped french beans 1/4 Cup (4 tbs)
Chopped carrot 1/4 Cup (4 tbs)
Chopped red pumpkin 1/4 Cup (4 tbs) ((bhopla / kaddu))
Shallots 1/4 Cup (4 tbs) ((madras onions))
Drumsticks pieces 1/2 Cup (8 tbs) ((saijan ki phalli / saragavo))
Rice 1 Cup (16 tbs) ((soaked for 30 minutes and drained))
Toovar dal 1/2 Cup (8 tbs) ((soaked for 30 minutes and drained))
Raw peanuts 1/4 Cup (4 tbs)
Turmeric powder 1/2 Teaspoon
Tamarind pulp 2 Tablespoon
Salt To Taste
Ghee 3 Tablespoon

Directions

Making

For the paste

1. Heat the oil in a broad non-stick pan, add all the ingredients and sauté on a slow flame for 4 minutes or till they turn golden brown in colour. Keep aside to cool slightly.

2. Blend in a mixer to a smooth paste using cup of water. Keep aside.

Finalizing

3. Heat the oil in a pressure cooker, add the curry leaves, all the vegetables, rice, toovar dal, peanuts and turmeric powder and sauté on a medium flame for 2 minutes.

4. Add the tamarind pulp, salt, prepared paste and 4 cups of hot water, mix well and pressure cook for 4 whistles.

5. Allow the steam to escape before opening the lid.

Serving

6. Add the ghee and mix well. Serve immediately.
