Buckwheat and Sprouts Khichdi (Protein Rich Recipe)

Buckwheat and Sprouts Khichdi, is light on the stomach, yet filling and nourishing. The aroma of this khichdi is irresistible, as it has been cooked with an appropriate selection of spices. Moong dal and sprouts are a good source of protein, making this a very healthy and wholesome choice for pregnant women. Buckwheat is commonly called as kutto or kutti no daro in case you have any trouble making your local grocer understand!


Buckwheat 3/4 Cup (12 tbs) , washed, drained (kutto / kutti no daro)
Mixed sprouts 3/4 Cup (12 tbs) (chana, moong and matki)
Yellow moong dal 1/2 Cup (8 tbs) , washed, drained (split yellow gram)
Oil 1 Teaspoon
Cloves 2 (aung / lavang)
Black peppercorns 2 (kalimirch)
Cumin seeds 1/2 Teaspoon
Asafoetida 1/4 Teaspoon (hing)
Turmeric powder 1/4 Teaspoon (haldi)
Salt To Taste



In a pressure cooker, heat oil and add loves, peppercorns and cumin seeds.

When the cumin seeds crackle, add asafoetida and sauté on a medium flame for a few seconds. 

Add buckwheat and yellow moong dal and sauté on a slow flame for a few more seconds.

Add mixed sprouts, turmeric powder, salt and 4 cups of water, mix well and pressure cook for 3 whistles.

Allow the steam to escape before opening the lid.


Serve immediately with fresh curds.
