Clemens Wilmenrod

Clemens Wilmenrod aka Clemens Hanh is a German celebrity chef who is noted for inventing and popularizing some of the best dishes of the cuisine. Credited to be the first German cook to be associated with television, this cook from Wilmenrod, Westerwald( the region which earned him his name), is known to create waves in the German culinary world with his recipes which always succeeded in enthralling people and would be sold for weeks together. Known for inventing the “stuffed strawberry”, Toast Hawaii and Arabian Riders’ Meat; and for popularizing the Rumtopf in South and West Germany, this highly innovative cook is known to be the first person to feature the turkey as the main item on the Christmas dinner menu.

Born on the 24th of July 1906, Clemens Wilmenrod lived on the earth till the 12th of April 1967. He started his career as a TV Host in 1953, on the 20th of February and hosted the show till the 16th of May 1964 along with his better half where he suggested some good ways of doing innovative cooking to his followers. Bitte in zehn Minuten zu Tisch was the name of the show which was broadcasted on Westdeutscher Rundfunk(WDR- a broadcasting company of west Germany. )The contributions of Clemens Wilmenrod to the German culinary world are immense especially during the post war period. His television shows as well as cookbooks were all a grand success and his recipes were considered phenomenal as when he would present a recipe, people would be so impressed by it, that the sales of the ingredients would remain high for weeks together after it is publicized. For example, when Wilmenrod would present a cod recipe, the sale of cod would be boosted and it would remain so for days together. 

A sensitive person at heart, Wilmenrod would take the comments of his viewers seriously. Once when he was accused of not being the inventor of the “stuffed strawberry”, he put a knife on his neck and challenged that he be shown the person who had tasted the dish before his invention. This culinary genius ended his worthy life himself when he was diagnosed with cancer of the stomach.

The TV Show, Bitte in zehn Minuten zu Tisch was a very popular one and Clemens Wilmenrod, also known as Don Clemente, showed how to make innovative dishes with ingredients that were not easily available in the post war period. Without any inhibitions, his recipes suggested usage of canned and not fresh ingredients as they were the only ones available to them then.
