In this video, Betty demonstrates how to make French Onion Soup. This is a classic that can be served with a fancy meal or made as a comfort food.

GETTING READY
1. Grease a baking pan with olive oil.
MAKING
2. In a large pot or Dutch oven, place olive oil and butter. Heat over medium-low heat until butter melts.
3. Add onion, salt, and pepper. Stir to coat well. Stir occasionally and cook for 2-2 1/2 hours or until onions turn golden brown.
4. Add wine and turn heat to medium-high. Cook until wine evaporates.
5. Pour broth and add thyme sprigs. Bring to a boil and simmer about 20 minutes.
For Topping:
6. In the meantime, place bread slices on greased baking pan and sprinkle the top with grated cheese.
7. Place the pan in 400 degree F oven and bake for 5-10 minutes or until cheese is brown and bubbly. You may turn oven to BROIL for the last minute or so.
FINALIZING
8. Remove thyme sprigs from soup and discard. Taste and adjust seasoning of salt.
9. Ladle soup into soup bowls and top each with a baked cheesy bread slice.

10. Serve and enjoy!
