Often called as King of Fruits, ripe mango is eaten as a dessert in different forms while the unripe fruit is taken in the form of pickles, chutney or as a flavouring agent. Mango eating is also considered good for health as it is a rich source of phytochemicals and nutrients. But temptation of over eating the mangoes results into some side effects which we are going to discuss in the following section.


Some Common Side Effects Of Mango


Increases Blood Sugar Level


Ripe mangoes are a rich source of sugar, so they often tend to increase the blood sugar level. So, individuals suffering from diabetes are advised not to eat ripe mangoes as the fruit often becomes dangerous for them.




A medium sized mango has 3g of fiber. So, just imagine the intake of fiber through mangoes, if you are not able to get hold of your temptation of over eating the fruit. Excessive eating of fibrous fruit results into diarrhea, which is one of the common side effects of mango. Thus, overeating of mangoes should be completely restrained.


Allergic Reactions


There are some allergies associated with eating mangoes which often appears in individuals sensitive to the fruit. The symptoms may vary from watery eyes, runny nose, breathing problems, abdominal pain, sneezing and even anaphylactic shock in extreme cases.


Contact Dermatitis


Mango sap is known to contain a chemical called urushiol. Many people are found sensitive to this substance which results into contact dermatitis. In this case, the skin becomes inflamed, itchy, flaky and blistery.   


Weight Gain


Mango is laden with calories though they are not bad in nature. But excessive eating of mango, often results in weight gain. Being a rich source of sugar, it is considered bad for people on weight loss. So, if you are keen to maintain your waist line, avoid over eating of mangoes.


Thus, we have seen that there are certain side effects of mango which can form a potential health hazard. So, excessive eating of the fruit in any form should be avoided to ward off its ill effects.
