How to Make Millionaire's Shortbread (Caramel and Chocolate Shortbread)

Today I'll be serving up one of my absolute favourites - Millionaire's Shortbread. Crisp shortbread biscuit base, sweet, indulgent caramel filling, and a rich, dark chocolate top. Not ideal for those on a diet but a wonderful, delicious treat, perfect with a cup of tea, and great for sharing with friends, family, or colleagues!


For short bread
Plain flour 360 Gram
Caster sugar 120 Gram
Butter 250 Gram , cubed
For the caramel
Canned sweetened condensed milk 800 Gram (2 cans)
Butter 100 Gram
Cream 6 Tablespoon
For chocolate
Cream 150 Milliliter
Plain chocolate 400 Gram , broken
Butter 70 Gram



1. Preheat the oven to 190 C.

2. In a large pot place the condensed milk cans with enough water to cover them.

3. Heat and let the water boil for 3 hours, checking occasionally that the water does not go below the top of the cans.


For short bread

4. Meanwhile, in a bowl, combine 250 grams of butter and caster sugar and mix well to form a paste.

5. Add in the flour and mix to form slightly crumbly dough.

6. In a large deep baking tray, place the dough and press slightly and roll with a rolling pin to flatten the surface.

7. Lightly poke the surface of the dough with a fork, place in the oven and bake for about 20 minutes.

8. After 3 hours, remove the cans from water and allow to cool completely.

For the caramel

9. In a large pan on medium heat, open the can and put the contents in.

10. Add in the 100 grams of butter and stir until it melts.

11. Pour in the cream, mix well and heat until it starts bubbling.

12. Stream the caramel over the shortbread and smooth out the top as much as possible and set aside to cool.


For chocolate

13. In a pan on medium heat, pour in the cream and heat until it is almost boiling.

14. Take the pan off the heat and add in the chocolate and stir well until the chocolate melts.

15. Add in the butter and stir to combine.

16. Using fork make creative patterns on the chocolate and set aside to cool.


17. Cut and store in cool and dry place and serve as desired.
