Green Bean Casserole From Scratch So Amazing

Our green bean casserole recipe - is a bit of a departure from the traditional. This side dish recipe has never been a 'thing' here in Canada, so we don't feel bound to the original green bean side dish recipe.
The original green bean casserole was created by a team at Campbells Soup Test Kitchen in 1955, whose leader was Dorcas Reilly. The recipe, originally called for cooked cut up green beans, one can of cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, a dash of pepper and canned French-fried onion it was a hit!

Ingredients

Onions 4
All purpose flour 45 Milliliter (3 Tbsp)
Bread crumbs 45 Milliliter (3 Tbsp)
Coarse salt 5 Milliliter (1 tsp)
Black pepper 5 Milliliter (1 tsp)
Bacon 125 Gram (¼ pound)
Mushrooms 500 Gram (1 pound)
Garlic 2 Clove (10 gm) , mince
All purpose flour 30 Milliliter (2 Tbsp)
Chicken broth 250 Milliliter (1 cup)
Cream 35% 250 Milliliter (1 cup)
Fresh green beans/Frozen green beans 750 Gram (1½ pounds)
Black pepper 5 Milliliter (1 tsp)

Directions

GETTING READY:

1. Preheat oven to 230ºC (450ºF).

MAKING:

2. Thinly slice the onions and toss In a large mixing bowl with flour, bread crumbs, salt, and pepper.

3. Spread in an even layer on a baking sheet, and bake for 30 minutes, tossing every 10 minutes or so.

4. If using fresh green beans; blanch them in salted boiling water, and then flash cool them in ice water.

5. If using frozen green beans; defrost.

6. Chop up the bacon and cook in a heavy cast iron pan over medium heat until crispy.

7. Add in sliced mushrooms and cook until they release most of their moisture.

8. Add in garlic and sauté until fragrant.

9. Stir flour into the pan until completely dissolved.

10. Pour in chicken broth, stirring and scraping up the fond on the bottom of the pan.

11. Bring to a boil and simmer until it just starts to thicken.

12. Lower heat and mix in black pepper and cream.

13. Mix in ¼ - 1/3 of the crisped topping onions.

14. Mix green beans into the pan and stir to coat.

15. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes.

16. Remove from the oven and sprinkle the remaining crisped topping onions on top.

SERVING:

17. Return to the oven for 5-10 minutes before serving.
