Betty's Classic Cheese Casserole

Betty demonstrates how to make Classic Cheese Casserole. This is a delicious cheese sandwich casserole that can be served as an entree or side dish.

Ingredients

White sandwich bread slice 8
Softened butter 2 Tablespoon (to cover bread slices on one side)
American cheese slice 4 , cut 1/4
Cooking oil spray 1/2 Teaspoon (as needed for greasing)
Milk 2 Cup (32 tbs)
Eggs 3 , well beaten
Salt To Taste
Ground black pepper To Taste
Tabasco sauce 1 Dash
Finely shredded sharp cheddar cheese 1/4 Cup (4 tbs) (Optional)
Bacon slices 3 , fried until beginning to crisp (Optional)

Directions

GETTING READY

1. Grease a 9-inch by 9-inch square pan with cooking oil spray and set aside.

 

MAKING

2. On a piece of bread, place a cheese slice, cover with another slice of bread and spread butter on top. Repeat to make 4 sandwiches. Trim edges to remove crust, if desired.

3. Into the greased 9-inch by 9-inch square pan, place the buttered sandwiches to cover the bottom.

4. In a medium-sized bowl, combine beaten eggs, milk, salt, pepper, and Tabasco sauce. Mix well and slowly pour the mixture evenly over sandwiches in baking pan. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 3 hours, or overnight.

5. Preheat oven to 325 degree F.

 

FINALIZING

6. Remove the plastic wrap, pop the pan in oven and bake for 1 hour.

7. After 50 minutes of baking, sprinkle shredded Cheddar cheese and place cooked bacon on top. Return pan to oven for 10 minutes.

8. Remove from oven and let sit on cooling rack for 5 minutes.

 

SERVING

9. Cut into squares and serve hot with creamy cucumber salad.
