Hooty The Owl Cake

Cake mix 18 1/2 Ounce (1 package, 2 layer size, White or yellow)
Fluffy white frosting mix/1 can, 1 pound vanilla frosting 14 1/2 Ounce (2 packages, 7.2 ounce size)
Assorted food colorings 4 Drop (adjust quantity as needed)
Black gumdrop 2 , flattened to size of penny (round)



1 Preheat the oven to 350F.

2 Lightly grease a 2 1/2-quart and 1 1/2-quart heatproof bowls and lightly dust them with flour.


3 As per the package directions, prepare the cake mix.

4 Into a 1 1/2-quart bowl transfer 2 1/2 cups batter.

5 Bake for 35 minutes.

6 Into the 2 1/2-quart bowl, transfer the remaining batter.

7 Bake for 40 minutes or until cake tester inserted in center comes out clean.

8 Invert the cakes on wire rack.

9 Allow to cool completely.

10 On a serving tray, place the larger cake, rounded side up.

11 Place the small cake on top and secure with wooden skewers.

12 If using frosting mix, prepare one package at a time.

13 If using vanilla frosting, use one-half for first coating.

14 Frost cake all over with frosting to keep down crumbs.

15 Tint 1 tablespoon frosting orange, for beak.

16 Tint 2 tablespoons yellow, for eyes.

17 Frost the top layer, shaping owl's head.

18 Apply 1/4 cup of frosting on each side of head, pulling up to points with spatula to resemble ears.

19 For the eyes, swirl two large circles of white frosting, about 1 1/2 inches in diameter, in the center of face

20 Place 1 tablespoon white frosting between the eyes and pull out and down to resemble owl's beak.

21 Meanwhile, beginning at the bottom layer of cake, applythe remaining frosting in overlapping, featherlike applications, using the tip of spatula. 22 Repeat the procedure on the top layer, carefully without disturbing the eyes and beak.

23 Spread the yellow frosting onto the prepared circles on the face of owl to form eyes.

24 Place the flattened gumdrops in the center of each and dot with tiny drop of white frosting.

25 Spread the orange icing over beak and allow to set.

26 Using a small brush dipped in black food color, draw 2 tiny black lines, one on each side of the beak.

27 Combine some black color, with a little white frosting to create grey and paint three or four lines on the owl's ears.

28 Outline eyebrows in same manner.


29 Allow to set for a while and seve.
