Lava Flow

 

Lava Flow is a tropical cocktail from Hawaii. The Lava Flow drink is a variation of the ‘Piña Colada’ and the ‘Strawberry Daiquiri’. The cocktail derive its name from the finished looks of the drink, which looks similar to molten lava. The traditional Lava Flow consist of light rum, pineapple juice, coconut cream, pureed strawberries, half a banana, and crushed ice. There are no many confirmed reports on the origin of the Lava Flow drink or how it came into existence. Though a Hawaiian cocktail, it has gained popularity throughout the world.

 

Ingredients and Popular method of Preparing Lava Flow

 

The typical Lava Flow consist of light Rum, Malibu, frozen strawberries, a small banana, pineapple juice, and coconut cream. To prepare the Lava Flow drink, initially blend the light rum and Malibu along with the strawberry in a blender. Once the rums and the strawberry are mixed, pour it into a tall glass either a Collins or Hurricane.  Then banana, coconut cream, and pineapple juice are poured into the blender with crushed ice. The mix is blended till it becomes smooth. The blended mixture is poured back into the tall glass along with the rum and strawberry mix. The strawberry mixture rises up to the glass creating a lava flowing effect.  The Lava Flow drink can be garnished with a pineapple wedge and paper umbrella, making it look typically tropical.

 

Serving the Lava Flow

 

Lava Flow is served chilled, but not with ice cubes. The lava flow drink is served in a Hurricane glass or a Collins.

 

Popular variations of Lava Flow

 

A few popular variations to the Lava Flow drink include adding of lime juice and strawberry schnapps to the drink. A few do not add banana to the cocktail and it may also contain powdered sugar and coconut milk. Lava flow can be also made without alcohol and can be served as a smoothie for kids.
