6 Reasons to Drink Wine
It is an oft-repeated statement that a daily glass of wine will do you more good than bad but have you ever wondered what the good effects of wine actually are? Here are the benefits that come with a glass of wine daily:
1. Feeds your head
As part of a study, when researchers gave memory quizzes to women in their 70s, those who drank a glass of wine or another alcoholic drink or more every day scored much better than those who drank less or not at all. Tedd Goldfinger, DO at University of Arizona School of Medicine, explains that wine helps prevent clots and reduces blood vessel inflammation, both of which have been linked to cognitive decline, as well as heart disease.
2. Keeps the scales on your side
A host of studies has found that people who drink wine daily have lower body mass than those who indulge occasionally. In fact, people who drink wine (not other liquor drinks) in moderate amount, have narrower waists and less abdominal fat. Research suggests that alcohol may encourage your body to burn extra calories for as long as 90 minutes after you have put down a glass.
3. Boosts your body’s defenses
In one British study, those who drank roughly a glass of wine a day reduced their risk of infection by Helicobacter pylori by 11 percent. The percentage looks significant in wake of the fact that this particular bacteria is a major cause of gastritis, ulcers and stomach cancers. According to a Spanish study, as little as half a glass is enough to guard you against food poisoning caused by salmonella.
4. Guard against ovarian woes
When Australian researchers recently compared the physical condition of women having ovarian cancer with those who didn't, they found that about a glass of wine a day seemed to reduce the risk of the disease by as much as 50 percent. Earlier research at the University of Hawaii had produced similar findings. Experts believe this may be due to presence of antioxidants or phyto-estrogens, which has high anti-cancer properties, in the wine. And according to a recent University of Michigan study, a red wine compound helped kill ovarian cancer cells in a test tube. This definitely is case for further research.
5. Builds better bones
On an average, women who drink wine moderately seem to have higher bone mass than those who abstain. Some studies even suggest that alcohol appears to boost the levels of estrogen - the hormone that reportedly slows down body’s destruction of old bone more than it slows the production of new bone.
6. Prevents blood-sugar trouble
Pre-menopausal women who drink one or two glasses of wine a day are 40 percent less likely than women who don’t drink to develop type 2 diabetes, according to a 10-year-long study by Harvard Medical School. While the reasons aren’t clear, wine seems to reduce insulin resistance in diabetic patients.
