Put wine and sugar in large shallow saucepan or skillet.
Bring to boil and simmer 5 minutes.
Peel pears carefully, leaving stems on.
Add pears to syrup and poach gently 15 minutes, or until tender, testing with fork at blossom end.
Stir with wooden spoon and baste pears.
If not red enough, repeat coloring step.
When done, remove pears to dish with 2 wooden spoons.
With vegetable peeler, remove 4 strips lemon peel along complete length of lemon.
Add to syrup and simmer 5 minutes.
Pour over pears and chill.
