To make handle: Outline a handle by inserting wooden picks in 2 lines 1 1/2 inches apart across the middle of the top of the watermelon.
On each side of the handle, position picks around the melon to outline 4 large scallops.
Cut out the two pieces from each side of the handle.
Cut watermelon meat from under handle.
Scoop out 3 cups of watermelon balls from inside of watermelon, removing seeds.
Cut around inside of watermelon so shell is about 3/4-inch thick.
Fill basket with fruit.
Makes 10 to 12 servings.
