Onions In Vinegar

Onions in a vinegar is a unique and tasty side dish. I love the flavor that bursts into my mouth when biting in to crispy onions drowning in vinegar. You really have to try the Onions in Vinegar to understand what I am talking about!
Ingredients
  Onions 250 Gram (Small Sized)
  Cloves 4
  Red chili powder 1 Teaspoon
  Ginger slices 2 Small
  Black pepper 1 Teaspoon
  Vinegar 1 Cup (16 tbs)
  Salt 1 Teaspoon
  Garlic 2 Clove (10 gm)
  Dry red chili 1
Directions

Peel the onions and keep them whole.
Rub salt and red chilli powder on them and keep aside for 30 minutes.
Boil vinegar with all the ingredients on a low fire for 10 minutes.
Strain.
Pack the onions and whole dry red chilli in a clean jar and pour the hot vinegar over.
Cork immediately.

OK, this bugs me-WHAT kind of vinegar? Apple cider or white??? Why doesn't anyone ever say which is best? Also the term "drowning" in vinegar doesn't quite do it justice. Perhaps "marinating?" Anyway, say which vinegar, forgodssake.
