Very Good Edible Red Sauce

Ingredients
  Canned italian plum tomatoes/2 pound fresh ripe plum tomatoes 16 Ounce (1 Can)
  Butter 1⁄4 Pound (1 Stick)
  Onion 1 Medium, peeled (Whole Ones)
  Salt 1 Pinch
  Sugar 1⁄4 Teaspoon (1 Pinch)
Directions

Chop tomatoes; combine tomatoes in juice with butter, whole onion, salt and sugar in a heavy sauce pan and bring to a slow boil.
Reduce to low heat and simmer for at least 1 hour, (maybe 1 1/2 hours).
Just before serving add a pat of butter to bring back the fresh taste of the cooked butter.
Serve with gnocchi or pasta shells.
