Tocai Friulano


Tocai Friulano, actually the Italian Sauvigon Vert also known as Sauvignonasse, is a variety of white wine grape variety from the Friuli Venezia Giulia region of Italy. Commonly used for the production of jug wines which are bland in taste,  it is also used in the production of More interestingly flavored full-bodied wines by manipulating by viticulture techniques like pruning the vines and holding back the yield. Aromatic, herbaceous, fresh citrus and floral flavored the Tocai Friulano wine varies in taste depending upon the temperature of the region in which it is grown. Often confused with the Sauvignon Blanc, the Hungarian Tokaji and the Tokay de Alsace; this wine is distinct from these wines and is not related to them though the Tocai Italico may be considered to be a sibling. The wine, currently, has more presence as a local wine.

 

Origin of Tocai Friulano Wine
Tocai Friulano, according to historical studies seems to have originated not in Friuli but in the Veneto region of France, from where it was carried to Friuli and other regions of Italy like Lombardy. According to historical references as evidenced by the mention of the grape in the wedding menu of Aurora Formentini( Venetian princess), the Tocai Friulano seems to have existed as early as the 17th century. The grape was migrated to France from where it was carried to Chile and was marketed from Chile under the name of Sauvignon Blanc, till ampelographers found out that it was actually Sauvignon Vert and not Sauvignon Blanc, an unrelated grape variety.

 

Tocai Friulano Wine Production Regions
Tocai Friulano, as already noted, is chiefly produced in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region of Italy. Apart from this region, it is produced to a significant extent in Slovenia and to a lesser extent in Chile and Argentina. Colli Orientali del Friuli, Fruli Grave, Collio goriziano, and Friuli Isonzo of the DOC of Friuli are the major regions for the cultivation of the Tocai Friulano and the production of its wine.

 

Tocai Friulano Wine- Viticulture Considerations
Tocai Friulano can be used for producing wines of both premium and ordinary qualities. By controlling the yield and harvesting it at the right time, not too early or too late, full bodied high quality wines can be produced. The Tocai Friulano vine is known to be prone to disease causing agents like odium or downy mildew.

 

Food Pairing Suggestions for Tocai Friulano Wine
The wine from Tocai Friulano is best enjoyed with seafood or dishes made with white meat. Braised vegetables and chicken are a couple of foods which can be tried out with this wine.
