Easy Filled Turnovers
|Shortening||1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)|
|Sugar||1 Cup (16 tbs)|
|All purpose flour||2 1⁄2 Cup (40 tbs)|
|Milk/Light cream||1 Cup (16 tbs)|
|For orange filling|
|Cornstarch||1⁄4 Cup (4 tbs)|
|Orange juice||1 1⁄2 Cup (24 tbs)|
|Orange peel||2 Tablespoon, grated|
|Sugar||3⁄4 Cup (12 tbs)|
|Orange juice||3⁄4 Cup (12 tbs)|
|Maraschino cherry syrup||1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)|
|Maraschino cherries||18 , chopped|
|Butter/Margarine||1 1⁄2 Tablespoon|
|Figs/Raisins/ pitted dates/ 2 cups mashed cooked prunes||2 Cup (32 tbs), finely chopped|
|Water||3⁄4 Cup (12 tbs)|
|Chopped nuts||1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)|
Mix thoroughly shortening, sugar, eggs and vanilla.
Blend in flour, salt and soda.
Cover; chill 1 hour.
Heat oven to 400°.
Roll dough 1/16 inch thick on lightly floured cloth-covered board.
Cut into 3-inch circles or squares.
Spoon 1 teaspoon filling on half of each circle.
Fold dough over filling; press edges together.
Place 1 inch apart on ungreased baking sheet.
Brush with milk; sprinkle with sugar.
Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until very light brown.
Immediately remove from baking sheet.
ORANGE FILLING :
Mix sugar, cornstarch and salt in medium saucepan.
Gradually stir orange juice into the sugar mixture.
Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens and boils.
Boil and stir 2 minutes.
Stir in orange peel and butter.
Mix sugar and cornstarch in saucepan.
Gradually stir in orange juice.
Stir in cherry syrup, cherries and butter.
Cook, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens and boils.
Boil and stir 1 minute.
DATE, FIG RAISIN OR PRUNE FILLING :
Combine all ingredients in saucepan.
Cook, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens.
