Peel and cube rutabaga.
In saucepan, cover rutabaga with cold water and bring to boil; cover and cook for 15 to 20 minutes or until tender.
Meanwhile, in large bowl, mix together 1/4 cup (50 mL) of the sugar and cinnamon.
Peel and slice apples very thinly; toss with sugar mixture and set aside.
In separate bowl, mix together flour and remaining sugar; cut in 2 tbsp (25 mL) of the butter until mixture is crumbly.
Drain rutabaga and mash with remaining butter; spread one-third in lightly greased 8-cup (2 L) casserole.
Spread one-half of the apple mixture on top.
Repeat layers, ending with rutabaga.
Sprinkle flour mixture evenly over top.
Bake, uncovered, in 350Ã‚Â°F (180Ã‚Â°C) oven for 30 to 40 minutes or until apples are tender and top is golden brown.
Season with salt and pepper to taste.
