Caramel Apple Bars

Ingredients
  Packed brown sugar 1 Cup (16 tbs)
  Margarine/Butter 1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)
  Shortening 1⁄4 Cup (4 tbs)
  All purpose flour/Unbleached flour 1 3⁄4 Cup (28 tbs)
  Quick-cooking oats 1 1⁄2 Cup (24 tbs)
  Salt 1 Teaspoon
  Baking soda 1⁄2 Teaspoon
  Chopped pared tart apples 4 1⁄2 Cup (72 tbs) (About 3 Medium Sized)
  All purpose flour/Unbleached flour 3 Tablespoon
  Vanilla caramels 14 Ounce (1 Package)
Directions

Heat oven to 400°.
Mix brown sugar, margarine and shortening.
Stir in 1 3/4 cups flour, the oats, salt and baking soda.
Remove 2 cups of the mixture; reserve.
Press remaining mixture in ungreased rectangular pan, 13 x 9 x 2 inches.
Toss apples and 3 tablespoons flour; spread over mixture in pan.
Heat caramels over low heat, stirring occasionally, until melted; pour evenly over apples.
Top with reserved oat mixture; press lightly.
Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until golden brown and apples are tender.
Cut into about 2 x 1 1/2-inch bars while warm.
Refrigerate any remaining bars.
