Tips To Make Rum Balls For A Perfect Dinner Party

Who would have thought that rum balls would be an ideal dessert for a dinner party? These simple indulgences are quick and easy to make and they are incredibly fragrant depending on the rum and ingredients that you have used. Most chefs prefer to make a simple no-cook version that is made from crushed cookies, crumbled cake, sugar, rum, liqueur, nuts and chocolate but you can actually add anything you want to the rum ball; and it’s going to be a hit. They aren’t really all that healthy and we do suggest that you consume them with caution but they are lovely to look at and a treat to eat!  To help you out, we’ve listed a few of our top tips on how to make great rum balls for a dinner party as quickly as possible.

 

 


Our Tips for Making Perfect Rum Balls for a Party

 


1. Choosing the Ingredients


  • Cookies or Cake – Some chefs prefer to use cookie crumbs while other prefer to use chocolate cake. It does not really matter but we do suggest you use the best. These crumbs form the base of the rum ball and stale crumbs do not really work. Some chefs like to use chocolate and vanilla wafers but if you are making rum balls for the first time, cake crumbs are the best and easiest to work with.

  • Binding Agents – You can use corn syrup, condensed milk, ganache, caramel, peanut butter, or jam which are sweet and thick but you can use literally any sweet sticky liquid to bind the ingredients together. These binding agents already contain sugar so you do not need to add more. The trick is to use a binding agent which will create a stiff dough.

  • Flavoring Agents – You can literally use any rum or spice combinations you want. Popular combinations include cocoa powder, allspice and dark rum; light chocolate liqueur, rum and cinnamon; spiced rum and vanilla etc. If you don’t want to use rum, you can use dark sweet wine or port, bourbon or even sweet apple and orange juice.


2. Preparation and Chilling

All you have to do is mix the ingredients and roll the dough into balls. The balls do not have to be cooked and they can be chilled or refrigerated till required.

 


Tips


  • We suggest you toast the nuts and use them as a covering on top of the rum balls. You can use any variety of nuts. Toast the nuts for 8 minutes in a hot oven till the nuts are lightly toasted and fragrant and roll the balls in the nut mixture.

  • Rum balls mature with age. We suggest you make them atleast a week in advance and store then in your refrigerator till you require them. This allows the flavors in the balls to mingle and mature.

  • You can choose to dip the rum balls in white or dark chocolate. These chocolate dipped balls have to be stored in a chilled airtight container.

 

You can literally jazz up these rum balls in any way possible. Try a dusting of edible gold or silver glitter, sugar sprinkles, or plain white icing sugar and just watch your guests gobble up these delights in a few minutes.
