Most of the apples undergo pesticide treatment during the growing phase to protect them from insects and rodents.  Once they are plucked they are covered with a layer of wax to make them look shiny and attractive. Waxing also prevents early rot of apples. While eating apples raw or while cooking, it is necessary to cleanse apples off the chemicals and the waxy coating.

  1. Hold the apple under running tap water.

  2. Using a soft brush, brush the apple gently in circular strokes to loosen the waxy coating on the apples.

  3. Dry apple with kitchen towels.

  4. Repeat brushing if waxy areas are visible after drying.

  1. Fill the sink with water.

  2. Add in a tablespoon of lemon juice and 1 tablespoon of baking soda.

  3. Put the apples in the water and scrub well to remove all pesticides, wax and other contaminants.

  • Most contaminants are located near stem and base of apple. Cut these off before consuming the apple.
