Before canning food items, it is absolutely essential that your canning jars are completely sterilized and free from any sort of impurities. Sterilizing jars in microwave is a proven and time effective way to remove any hidden impurities in your jars.
Steps for sterilizing jars in microwave
- Use soap and water to wash the jars and make sure that no residue remains in the jars. Take care to wash the jars completely. Check your jars for any nicks or hairline cracks where food may have got stuck.
- Preheat the oven to 160 degree Celsius or 280 degree Fahrenheit.
- Fill the jars with water until the water level reaches to the middle of the jar. Place these jars carefully in the preheated oven. Depending on the capacity of your oven more than 2-3 jars can be placed for sterilization process.
- Heat the jars in the microwave until the water in the jars comes to a boil. The boiling water would help in killing all the harmful bacteria inside the jars and would help in sanitizing the jars.
- Carefully remove the hot jars from the oven wearing an oven glove or a thick cloth. Be very careful as the jars would be extremely hot.
- Drain the remaining hot water in the jars in the sink and put the jars back in the oven in an upside-down position. This would help drain the moisture in the jars and would aid in quick drying.
- Make sure that you clean and sanitize the lids of the jars as well.
- As soon all the moisture inside the jars has dried up, remove the jars carefully and immediately fill with the food item and close the lid tightly. Heated jars tend to expand so even if some hot preserves are poured in the jars for canning, the jars would remain intact and would not break.
Sterilizing jars in the microwave is a time efficient way to completely remove any impurities or residue in the jars.
