Ingredients for smoking boston butt
For making a smoked boston butt of 8 pounds, you need a barbecue, yellow mustard, a meat thermometer and boston butt rub. If you do not get a boston butt rub, you can make your own mix of spices with 8 tablespoons of paprika, 4 teaspoons each of powdered onion, garlic, and black pepper, a teaspoon of cayenne pepper and 2 teaspoons of cumin.
Here’s how to smoke boston butt
• For smoking boston butt, the first thing you need to do is, start your barbecue and then, set it to a temperature within 220 to 275 degrees F.
• Now, while the barbecue is getting heated, open up your boston butt package and coat the meat with some yellow mustard. This gives an extra flavor to the boston butt and keeps the butt rub adhered to the meat. You can use any kind of barbecue rub for coating your meat, if you do not get a boston rub. But, just when you are shopping, make sure to go for a rub with less or no sugar, as, the sugar in the rub smokes the meat deep red instead of dark brown or black.
• After you have coated the boston butt generously with the rub, place the meat on the barbecue grill and then cover it. Cook the meat for two hours before flipping off the meat to its opposite face. Repeat this step at the interval of every two hours, turning and rotating the boston butt, to make sure, it cooks thoroughly well on all sides.
• Ideally, it should take 8 hours for the boston butt to smoke completely. However, you still need to make sure and to do that, get the help of your meat thermometer and check the internal temperature of the boston butt. If the temperature of the meat reads 190 degrees Fahrenheit, you can remove the boston butt from the barbecue grill. It is now ready to be served and savored.
