Syrup Soaked Sweet Koeksisters
|Flour||4 Cup (64 tbs)|
|Baking powder||2 Tablespoon|
|Water||2 Cup (32 tbs)|
Rub butter into sifted, dry ingredients till mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs and mix with water.
Leave dough to stand for 1 hour.
Cut into lengths and plait.
Fry a few at a time in hot oil.
Lift, drain and plunge into chilled syrup.
The syrup is made of 8 cups sugar and 4 cups water, stirred in a saucepan until the sugar is dissolved.
Add 1 heaped tspn, cream of tartar and boil rapidly for 5 minutes.
Remove from the stove and add 2 large tblspns, golden syrup and 1 dssrtspn.
ground ginger (if liked).
Cool and chill.
