Break the vanilla pod into pieces and put in a bowl with one-quarter of the sugar.
Using a wooden spoon, crush the pod and sugar together until the pod is reduced to very small specks.
Alternatively, put the pod and one quarter of the sugar in the jar of an electric blender and blend until the pod is reduced to small specks.
Stir in the remaining sugar.
Keep in an airtight container.
